EU upgrades fiber optic cable undergrounding

The Commission has signed grant agreements worth €142 million with 21 projects upgrading or deploying new connectivity backbone cables, including submarine cables. Adding optical fibre is essential for fostering energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and ensuring the development of resilient, future-proof telecommunications infrastructure. But despite ambitious goals, progress in FTTx and FTTH infrastructure remains uneven. In 2025, countries like Spain, France, and Sweden are leading the charge with fiber. Advanced digital network infrastructure and digital services will be key in shaping the competitiveness of many European Union (EU) sectors – among them manufacturing, energy and healthcare – in the near future. In newly contracted buildings or building undergoing major renovations, passive infrastructure (mini ducts) and in-building fiber wiring (fiber optic cables) must be installed up to the network termination point in the end user's apartment/unit.

Tunisia s fiber optic cable issue

On Saturday (September 6, 2025) multiple undersea submarine cables in the Red Sea had been severed, causing widespread internet disruptions across parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The incident serves as a stark reminder: the link that serves as global digital arteries. Cloud users relying on Microsoft Azure are experiencing, or may soon experience, increased latency and potential slowdowns, thanks to damage to critical underwater fiber optic cables in the Red Sea. I checked online and it said VDSL can have potential for upload, so I accepted and got a VDSL with them.

Norway upgrades optical fiber communication cables

Space Norway is set to establish new high-speed connection from the Norwegian mainland to Jan Mayen and Svalbard. A rapidly expanding network of submarine fibre optic cables has brought about a sea change in Norway's digital infrastructure. Recent investments in subsea fiber infrastructure have radically improved Norway's connectivity. The 192-fibre-cable is the only direct link between these cities, fully independent from existing fiber routes – thus provide much needed diversity for this region abundant with cheap.
